Reduce simultaneous category count

Reduce the number of visually distinct categories when viewers must estimate several group counts at the same time. For example, do not ask readers to compare many color- or orientation-coded group totals simultaneously in one view when quantity comparison is critical.

Why fewer simultaneous groups helps counting by sight

Simultaneous numerosity estimation is limited across multiple distinct sets. When too many groups compete for at-once quantity judgment, the display asks more of the viewer than the perceptual summary can support.

Mechanism: Viewers can estimate numerosity across several sets only up to a limited number of simultaneous groups, so reducing group count lowers overload in quantity comparison.

Evidence: The review collates this paper as a source on summary and clustering-related tasks. In its numerosity discussion, the paper states that the number of possible simultaneous numerosity estimates may be limited and therefore the number of visually distinct categories should be limited when simultaneous numerosity estimation is critical (Zeng & Battle, 2023; Szafir et al., 2016).
