Move axis ticks toward the most important marks

For approximate value reading in charts where one side holds the most important marks, use axis ticks on the nearest side to improve readability and mitigate slower rough height or width estimates for readers scanning the key data.

Axis placement near key data

Place axis tick labels on the side of the chart closest to the marks readers most need to judge. For example, move a vertical axis from left to right when the key bar or latest values sit near the right edge so readers can estimate height more quickly.

Why nearby ticks speed rough reading

Axis labels help readers make quick height and width judgments. When the labels sit closer to the important marks, readers can estimate those marks with less visual travel.
